Replacing the defunct Formula 4 Sudamericana, the Formula Academy Sudamericana has been launched to reinvigorate single-seater racing in Brazil with a focus on developing Brazilian drivers. Where the previous series ran primarily in Uruguay, the new series will run primarily in Brazil with the final race taking place in Uruguay.
Race weekends will consist of two free practice sessions, qualifying and two races, and points will be awarded in the same style as F1, but with an additional point for pole and fastest lap.
With no Brazilian drivers racing in Formula 1 and many young drivers opting for the national stock car championship, it is nice to see a renewed emphasis in a country with such an illustrious motorsport heritage. Let’s hope this is the start of a bright future.
