Motorsport in South Africa has a rich tradition and that tradition has continued with Formula Ford South Africa, or officially the Investchem Formula 1600 powered by Ford Championship. This championship features both the Kent-powered Formula Ford cars competing in the Formula Ford Regional Championship together with the Duratec-powered slicks and wings Investchem Formula 1600 championship.
The national championship bolsters a healthy R200 000 cash prize for the winner of the championship as well as R125 000 to the runner-up and R62 500 to the third placed driver as well as the added bonus of being officially designated a feeder series to the Mazda Road to Indy Shootout which promises a $200,000.00 USD prize to the winner to go towards a seat in USF2000. Even if for whatever reason the Formula 1600 champion not meet Mazda Road to Indy eligibility requirements, he or she will have the opportunity to participate at the Walter Hayes Formula Ford event in England at the end of the year, with Investchem Formula 1600 sponsoring the race weekend with a top team including entry and tires.
Races are held over 9 race weekends (two races per weekend) for the national championship and 7 for the regional championship at Kyalami, Killarney, Zwartkops, East London, Aldo Scribante, Kyalami, Phakisa, Dezzi Raceway and Red Star Raceway.
