The Italian Formula 4 Championship was the second F4 championship launched in 2014 when the FIA announced the category. They race Tautuus carbon fibre chassis with the same 1400 cc Fiat-FPT engine used in the previous Fomula Abarth series detuned to 160 HP from the original 180 HP.
While the category has experienced full grids in its first two years of existence, 2017 has seen interest decline with it harder for smaller outfits to be competitive. Only 5 teams entered at least one driver in 2017 so it will be interesting to see how 2018 pans out. 13 teams are registered with a 14th just recently announced (KDC Racing) but as of this time (February 2018) it is hard to get a firm idea of how many drivers will race the whole season.
The series is definitely a hard fought series with Lance Stroll and Marcus Armstrong counting themselves as winners of the championship.
