Where Sports Technology Fuels Climate Solutions

At Climate Week NYC this past week, Liberty Global partnered with Formula E to host an inspiring event spotlighting how sports, technology, and climate action intersect to drive meaningful change.
Three key themes emerged from conversations from leaders across sustainability, innovation and clean energy investment:
- The green transition is here to stay – from EV adoption to green energy investments, momentum is accelerating across industries
- Technology transfer & innovation – how breakthroughs in motorsport can accelerate progress in the wider energy and transport sectors
- The decarbonisation journey starts with transparent, accurate data – with AI and other emerging technologies, we’re unlocking a new era of insight into impacts and opportunities based on solid data analysis
Sport as a Catalyst for Pragmatic Sustainability and EV Adoption
Also appearing at Climate Week NYC was Formula E racer Lucas di Grassi who explained how sport, and Formula E specifically, could influence the broader shift to clean mobility.
“The platform for sportsmen is huge. They reach tens or hundreds of millions of people. That gives them the ability to influence behavior far more quickly than governments can legislate.”
Sweden’s Tierp Motorsport Arena Arena Launches Sustainable Water Partnership with Bluewater
Tierp Arena, one of Northern Europe’s largest motorsport venues located 120 km from Stockholm, has announced a new partnership with Swedish water purification and beverage company Bluewater to deliver sustainable hydration solutions at its events. The collaboration marks a major step in reducing single-use plastic bottles while ensuring visitors have access to premium-quality drinking water.
As part of the initiative, an advanced Bluewater hydration station will initially be installed at the venue, offering ultra-purified water for fans to refill their own reusable bottles. The arena plans to install a number of the water stations, some of which will uniquely feature digital signage screens showing live event information and environmental updates, creating an interactive and sustainable experience for visitors.

Is Hydrogen the Future for Motorsport and the Planet?

The roar of engines has long been synonymous with high-octane spectacle, but as the world grapples with a climate crisis, motorsport is navigating a crucial crossroads. Can it continue to be a pioneer of automotive technology while embracing a sustainable future? The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) believes the answer is yes, and it’s betting on hydrogen. Global Sustainable Sport looks into it.
“I think the overall message of Extreme H is that we are pioneering a breakthrough technology that is not yet widely understood but has enormous potential to accelerate the transition to net zero. Motorsport is the ideal platform for this mission; it provides a high-performance testing ground to push hydrogen innovation forward, while also serving as a powerful stage to engage global audiences.”
Zimspeed: A Legend of the Nürburgring with a Legacy of Fibre

Zimspeed embodies a legacy of innovation, from carbon fibre to today’s natural fibre revolution. Bcomp explains how they do it. “There is a huge potential for more sustainable composites in motorsport, especially bodywork. The moulds are the same, and the processing is also similar. I am not surprised it has been made mandatory in the GT4 class and features so frequently at almost every level of motorsport. It offers an excellent combination of properties, including ductile failure mechanics and high specific bending stiffness,” Holger Zimmerman explained.
Motul: Powering Decarbonisation Through Sustainable Lubricant Innovations
Motul leverages its racing heritage and 170 years of expertise to drive decarbonisation through sustainable lubricants, innovation, and regional adaptation. “The real shift has been moving from a singular focus on combustion engines to a portfolio that serves multiple powertrains,” Lionel Dantiacq, CEO of Motul Asia Pacific explained. “Hybrids, for instance, require fluids that both protect combustion components and optimise electric drive efficiency. For hydrogen and electric vehicles, innovations such as immersive cooling are being explored to help batteries and fuel cells operate safely and efficiently. These represent forward-looking technologies that could ease the transition in markets still reliant on infrastructure development.”
