It’s Supercar Sunday on The Last Lap

It is Supercar Sunday on this edition of The Last Lap as I bring you some gorgeous automotive art that you can revel in while sipping your preferred Sunday morning beverage. There are supercars that you can read about, watch in action, and even purchase but first, what is considered a supercar?

Definitions will vary as it is of course subjective but I found that this definition from Autocar, courtesy of Chicago Ferrari Dealer Continental Autosports works for me. “Autocar cites numerous definitions, but ultimately leans into the subjectivity of the query, writing that “defining whether a car is a supercar comes down, as it always did, to blind prejudice. A supercar isn’t about stats; it’s about a mindset. Does it make you go a bit tingly? Yes? It’s probably a supercar.”

Sit back, relax, and enjoy this Supercar Sunday on the Motorsport Prospects Last Lap. It will be quite the ride.

The Robb Report presents what they consider to be the the 25 greatest supercars of the 21st Century (so far). “To that end, we’ve updated our list of the 25 greatest supercars so far this century, and it’s by all means an exercise in subjectivity. Some models that made it here may not be the fastest production cars out there or the most agile, but they have either fueled our imagination or introduced new levels of innovation. And honestly, in some cases, they’re just the ones our inner child feels compelled to draw . . . all the time. And the fact that these will all become the classics of the future has us confident that when it comes to the life automotive, the kids are going to be just fine.”

The Robb Report also looks at the 25 fastest production cars in the world right now. “The first production vehicle to crack 200 mph was the Ferrari F40. The year was 1987; immediately after that Italian stallion’s speedometer registered 201, the race to enter the 300 mph club began. In 2019, amid fervent competition between Koenigsegg, Hennessey and Bugatti, the Chiron Super Sport bested the others by a horseshoed nose, achieving a staggering 304.7 mph. In early 2020, a bevy of new hypercars was announced—several promising at least 300 mph. Then, last year, SSC North America turned a claim into reality, cementing the SSC Tuatara’s spot at number two—at least for now.”

Sports Car Digest looks at the most important milestone supercars of the past 50 years. “It would be helpful to first of all what we mean by a “milestone supercar.” As automotive engineering and design has advanced through the years, supercars became the flagship vehicles for a lot of new technology or for being the ultimate models of that specific era or generation of cars, so much so that they are looked at through the lens of “before and after.” These are the cars that so perfectly define what a supercar is, or introduced new technologies and systems that we take for granted today. They planted their names in history and will never be forgotten.”

Only Hennessey Performance Engineering could look at the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and see a car that needs more power. The Texas-based tuner has announced the over-the-top Venom 1200 Mustang GT500. The upgrade package, which includes a slew of powertrain modifications, doesn’t just boost performance a little—it boosts it by over 400 horses.

2022 Pininfarina Battista

The Drive reviews the incoherently fast 2022 Pininfarina Battista and comes away impressed. “This is a hypercar and, yes, I hate the term as well. But calling it a mere “supercar” doesn’t feel adequate, either. A hypercar’s whole point is how it affects you on a wordless, emotional level. Without the noise and character of a traditional internal combustion engine to rely on, Pininfarina here interprets modern-day performance as a wickedly styled car that purrs and drives like the dawn of something new and unknown.”

When the fine folks at Evo say that the BAC Mono R is the fastest car they have ever driven, you tend to take notice. “Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche… They don’t stand a chance against BAC Mono R, the purest definition of a race car for the road. To see just how fast it is, we sent Steve Sutcliffe to Anglesey circuit.” Watch the video above for their review.

Of course its not all supercar glitz and glory. Sports Car Digest looks at 10 massive supercar flops. “An incredible number of factors are involved in getting a supercar from the drawing board through concept stages and into eventual production. The design language, aerodynamics, performance, and pricing are just some of the elements that have to complement each other with a minimal margin for error. It is almost inevitable, then, that a supercar manufacturer will occasionally trip up and end up with a disappointing product. In some cases, the carmaker is lucky to escape with a slap on the wrist, but in other situations, the consequences of a supercar flop are much more severe.”

Lamborghini only built 20 examples of the stylish Reventón supercar and one of them will be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s next month as part of its Motorworld München sale. And get this, it has has just 68 miles on the odometer, meaning it’s basically brand new. “The Raging Bull unveiled the Reventón at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007. The supercar—which is named after a fighting bull and the Spanish word for “small explosion”—was a limited production model that bridged the gap between the Murciélago and the Aventador. It paired a flamboyant design with the former’s 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V-12, which was capable of generating 641 horses and 487 ft lbs of twist. Only 20 coupes were produced and sold to customers, along with a 21st example, numbered 00/20, that was built specifically for the Lamborghini Museum.”
