Racecraft Tips & Techniques

Race Driver Preparation Technical Preparation

In the high-stakes world of open formula racing, race driver preparation is crucial for achieving peak performance on the track. Martin from lowerlaptime looks at the four essential pillars of race driver preparation: Technical, Mental, Tactical, and Physical preparation. Get all the details as to why here.

Grassroots Motorsports explains the data strategies that you need to unlock success in time trials. “Time trial racing seems simple: Fastest car against the clock wins. Scratch beneath the surface, though, and complexities emerge. When done at a high level, time trial is a specific discipline requiring a specific approach to consistently succeed.” You can read what they are here.

In the video above, Enzo Mucci guides you through how to change the habits that are causing you to fail.

Ross Bentley of Speed Secrets is know for the answer “it depends…” when asked questions related to racecraft. In one of his latest columns, he explains what he means. “Why do I answer with “It depends” so often? Well, it depends… (you knew that was coming, right?!). Because many questions can’t be answered on the same level as they were asked. To really answer them properly, we have to dig a bit deeper.” Read his complete explanation of what he means here.

Learning to master Turn 5 at Thunderhill Raceway Park, otherwise known as “The Cyclone“? Here are some tips. “The Cyclone isn’t about luck but skill, precision, and a steady hand under pressure. Whether you’re chasing the perfect lap or just trying to keep the car pointed in the right direction, mastering this creature of a turn can make or break your day at Thunderhill.”

On Racing Drivers by Terence Dove discusses how to excel by adopting some driving characteristics that are opposite to your preference. “So, it seems there are two types of drivers in this respect, both fast, one who drives by the seat of their pants and another who knows every inch of the track and can recall it all. For brevity I’ll call them instinct drivers and discipline drivers.” Read the full post here.

3 Essential Fitness Focus Areas for Racing Drivers

Active karter and founder of Hanscombe Performance, Rhys Hanscombe explains what the three essential fitness focus areas for racing drivers should be here.

Davin Sturdivant of Apex Advisory Racing explains the power of positive mental programming in racing.

“Your subconscious mind doesn’t understand the concept of “can’t.” It simply follows the instructions you feed it. If you focus on “don’t crash into the wall,” your brain doesn’t register the “don’t”—it just fixates on “crash into the wall.” Instead, a more productive mental cue would be “get close to the wall.” This subtle shift in phrasing can make a huge difference in how you react under pressure, helping you build confidence, precision, and control.”
