Formula E Leads the Way in Sustainability Once Again

Formula E has continued its domination of Enovation Consulting’s Sustainable Championships Index, topping the ranking for the fourth consecutive year. Formula One finishes second once more, while MotoGP is outright third this year after being tied for the position with Extreme E in the 2024 ranking.

The FIA European Rallycross Championship, FIA World Rally Championship and FIA European Rallycross gained the most points in this year’s edition, demonstrating the elevation of their sustainability credentials. The Asian Le Mans Series climbed the most places in this year’s index, with the FIM Speedway of Nations, the FIM Speedway Under 21 World Championship, and the European Le Mans Series all improving their rankings similarly.

The purpose of the white papers is to give motorsport stakeholders an understanding of where they are in their sustainability journey and showcase the path that others have taken.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) has ramped up its environmental conservation efforts by integrating sustainability initiatives into its motorsport sponsorship. As preparations for the 2025 WRC Safari Rally intensify, the bank is leveraging its support for rallying to champion environmental stewardship. This year’s rally will take place from March 20 to 23 in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, the KCB-sponsored drivers Evans Kavisi, alongside rally sensation Tinashe Gatimu, have taken the lead in promoting environmental stewardship ahead of the iconic event.

“Motorsport is about precision, endurance, and resilience—qualities that also define our approach to sustainability,” said Tinashe Gatimu. “As drivers, we are responsible for more than just the speed; we must ensure that the rally leaves a positive impact on our communities and the environment. As a woman in motorsport, I also want to show that we can lead both on the track and in championing sustainability efforts that secure a better future for the next generation.”

The FIA is hiring an Environmental Impact Project Manager based in Geneva, Switzerland. “Sustainability is at the core of the FIA’s mission. We are looking for an Environmental Impact Project Manager to drive our sustainability strategy, overseeing key initiatives internally and across our global network.”

The FIA Environmental Impact project manager drives the FIA’s sustainability strategy, overseeing processes, programs, and initiatives both internally and across its global membership. Reporting to the Head of Sustainability, this role fosters collaboration with internal departments, member clubs, and championships to implement and advance sustainable practices.

A defining moment for sustainable motorsport. At the Adelaide Motorsport Festival 2025, the Rodin Cars FZED hit the track running on Zero synthetic fuel, demonstrating that fossil-free fuel can deliver top-tier performance in high-speed motorsport. In this video, hear from festival organizers, Zero’s CEO Paddy Lowe, and the driver Josh Buchan himself as they discuss the significance of synthetic fuel, its impact on motorsport, and what this means for the future of racing.

AVL Racetech has announced that it has formed a technical cooperation partnership with Ravenol, related to the development of dedicated lubricants for hydrogen-fueled ICE applications. According to the companies, the partnership aims to “push the boundaries of hydrogen combustion, exploring new opportunities and innovative solutions that contribute to alternative powertrain technologies”.

Dr Markus Karsch, head of product development at Ravenol, said, “The technical partnership with AVL Racetech in the field of innovative oils for hydrogen combustion engines aims to develop high-performance lubricants that maximize the efficiency and longevity of this pioneering drive technology.”

Dr Paul Kapus, manager, spark ignited engines at AVL, added, “We believe that even at 150kW/l we have not reached the limits for specific power of hydrogen engines. The cooperation will help us to push limits further.”

Hyundai IONIQ 5 N

Recently, Palmersport track event participants got to drive the revolutionary Hyundai IONIQ 5 N for a few untimed laps on the North circuit, in addition to the normal full driving time with the Ginetta G56, and guests were hugely impressed by what they experienced:

“This car has flipped EV driving on its head, as it’s introduced the connectivity of driving that you get with petrol cars – gear changing, responsiveness, reactions and general enjoyment – that modern EVs lack.”

Formula 1 published its 2024 Impact Report last week. Here are a few highlights:

  • 80 percent of promoters fueled races with alternative energy sources, including solar, renewable energy tariffs and biofuels and 90 percent of promoters expanded green transportation options for fans
  • Formula 1’s increased investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and biofuels reduced total travel-related emissions by 19 percent
  • This season, an estimated 90 percent of emissions from the paddock, pit lane and technical centers will be reduced across all European grands prix through a combination of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), biofuel, solar panels and battery power
  • Formula 1 aims to reach its net zero goals by 2030.
