Driver Development News, Tips & Techniques

  • Hinsta has made available a 6 part video series called Formula for Health and Performance which is “an online series powered by Hirslanden Check-up Center & Hintsa Performance covering 6 themes, 6 weeks, 6 fascinating talks by the world’s top high-performance and medical experts.” You can register here.
  • You often see athletes wearing headphones before competition but have you thought about the effect of music in sports? Check out this interesting and informative look into The Effects of Music in Sports to see how it can help you improve your performance on the track.
  • Continuing on the Daniel Ricciardo train, when he won his first Grand Prix in over 3 years he was pretty adamant that he “had never left.” In I never left, I learnt from the setbacks he expands on the sentiment and explains what to do to restore your confidence.
  • Still on the fence about simulators and how they can help you in racing? So was James Hinchcliffe until the pandemic hit and changed his mind. Watch the video below as he explains why.

  • Praga Cars UK is replacing four of its five factory R1s that are competing in this season’s Praga Category as part of Britcar Endurance Championship and are therefore offering them for sale. The factory R1s have supported Praga’s Guest Driver programme in 2021 that has seen experienced racers and novice drivers pilot the 265hp, 635kgs all-carbon cars to multiple podiums by the group of 10 high-profile drivers selected to spearhead this season’s campaign. You can get more information here.
  • Radical Sports Cars have announced an Arrive and Drive Program for For the Radical Challenge round at Spa Francorchamps in October. There are Arrive and Drive options from €10.000 and are catered to international drivers. Full details can be found here.
  • The Formula Ford Festival is rapidly approaching and at last count there were at 75 entries. Due to a last minute driver cancellation, Low Dempsey Racing has a seat available for the festival. You can get more information by emailing the team at hello@lowdempseyracing.com or give Team Owner Andy a call on 07972623255.
  • Finally, if you would prefer to buy a whole racing team you can do so as a complete championship winning Formula Ford team is selling all of their equipment and cars in the UK. You can get all the details at Race Cars Direct here.

The Business of Being a Race Driver

  • While sports marketing services agency Sport Dimensions primarily represents sponsors in showing them how to get the best out of their sponsorship programs, the experience they have gained has led them to compile this very useful article on Unofficial Advice for Those Seeking New Sponsorship. A helpful read as you prepare your budgets for 2022.
  • I have posted regular videos from Enzo Mucci because they are not only packed with useful (and more important actionable!) advice for drivers looking at getting sponsorship and becoming professional race drivers. But they are also inspirational as well. If you are getting down on yourself, have a look at his latest message to any race driver thinking of giving up.

Series News

Motorsport Prospects Weekly Debrief for September 27, 2021
F3 Asian Championship
  • Penske has announced that they are taking control of the Indy Lights Championship in 2022 from Anderson Promotions. Anderson will still be in charge of USF2000 and Indy Pro2000 in the Road to Indy Program and Indy Lights will still be a part of the RTI but Penske CEO Mark Myles stated that they wanted to build a tighter connection between Indycar and Indy Lights. “It is about strengthening the pipeline to IndyCar,” Miles added. “We want to grow Indy Lights into an even stronger link and final step for drivers, teams and sponsor partners leading to the most audacious and competitive open-wheel series on the planet.”
  • Praga Cars have confirmed that there will be a new one-make UK Praga Cup for 2022. Mark Harrison, Managing Director, Praga Cars said: “We have seen significant growth in 2021 in the awareness of Praga and the R1, had a successful year on the grid within Britcar Endurance, and strengthened our team with the recruitment of Lucy Payne as Motorsport Manager. Most importantly though, we saw increased interest from drivers, teams and potential sponsors after releasing dramatic pictures of all nine competing R1s together on the grid at Silverstone in June and this has encouraged us to build on momentum and target the one-make Cup in 2022.”

Esports & Sim Racing

  • iRacing have partnered with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team to build multiple racing vehicles. “We couldn’t be more excited to add world-class race cars like the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance to iRacing in the near future,” said iRacing executive vice president Steve Myers. “The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team has been the dominant marque at the highest level of motorsport for quite some time, coming off of seven consecutive championships for its cars and drivers, and bringing their world-class machines to iRacing further establishes our commitment to providing our nearly 200,000 devoted iRacers the world’s most authentic sim racing experience.”

Business of Motorsport

  • In last week’s Motorsport Prospects Weekly Debrief I mentioned Juncos and their partnership with Purdue University. In this video courtesy of Racer, Ricardo Juncos discusses how this new alliance will help develop future mechanics, engineers, managers, and more to work in motor racing.
Motorsport Prospects Weekly Debrief for September 27, 2021 - Using Music to Get You Ready to Race and More
  • The Motorsport Industry Association has announced details of their MIA Conference and Technology Showcase (CTS2021) to be held October 14, 2021. You can get all the details here.
  • With my background in law it is no secret that I gravitate to any type of motorsport law related legal topics I can and here are two that may be of interest to the lawyers and team owners reading. The first discusses What Happens When Drivers Ignore Flags In Formula One? from a regulations standpoint. The second discusses the infamous contractual negotiations that saw Michael Schumacher move from Jordan to Benetton. This is a classic case that demonstrates the impact of changing one word in a contract can have on everybody involved.

As mentioned above, the F3 Asian Championship is embarking on another year of competition adding to the increasing number of championships racing in the region. I interviewed both Josh Evans and Dan Wells on what it is like racing in Asia. Look for an upcoming article by Dan on some tips on picking a sim racing rig.

Here are a few motorsport-related tidbits that I came across this week that are perfect for the Last Lap.

  • Instead of my typical video of a lap of a circuit, this time I am bringing you a whole bunch in this incredible video of the 1967 German Grand Prix at the old Nurburgring. The footage is awesome.
