Developing Your Story

This week’s episode of the Business of Being a Race Driver explores how to develop your story, along with a free tool to assist you in this process. Additionally, I share tips on securing sponsorships and fostering long-term relationships, among other valuable insights!

The EKN article “How to Secure Sponsorship for Your Young Karting Star: A Parent’s Guide” provides essential strategies for parents looking to secure sponsorship for their young karting drivers. It emphasizes the importance of building a professional brand, starting with local partnerships, and crafting tailored sponsorship pitches. Parents are encouraged to create a media kit showcasing their child’s achievements and social media presence, engage with local businesses, and present clear value to potential sponsors. The article highlights that securing sponsorship is a gradual process that requires patience and persistence. For more details, you can read the full article here.

The Game Matters article “Project Motor Racing’s Career Mode Highlights the Real Struggle of Motorsports Budgets” discusses the upcoming racing game by Straight4, which aims to authentically portray the financial challenges faced in professional motorsport. The career mode allows players to create their own racing teams, choosing their geographical base, which affects the series they can enter and the associated costs. Unlike traditional racing games, players must purchase cars rather than simply unlocking them, emphasizing the importance of managing budgets. The game also features a detailed sponsorship system, where different sponsors cover various costs, adding a layer of strategy to the gameplay. Project Motor Racing is set to release on November 25 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. For more details, you can read the full article here.

Developing Your Story

In the video above, Amanda Sorensen, professional off-road racer and drifter for the US Air Force, explains how she secures sponsors and builds long-term relationships. Sorensen was interviewed by Alex Striler at the 4th Annual Motorsports Sponsorship Summit on January 12, 2025.

It is always important to thank your sponsors and Zak O’Sullivan welcomed supporters to the Classic Motor Hub in Ablington on Saturday, June 14, in recognition of the backing that made his 2024 Formula 2 season possible. “During the event, Mr O’Sullivan and his driver coach Kieren Clark took part in a Q&A session covering his journey from karting to Formula 2. He also offered advice to young drivers, emphasizing the importance of education alongside racing.”

Sponsors aren’t just investing in a logo on your car — they’re investing in YOU! Your dreams, your ambition. That’s why it’s so powerful to tell a story that goes deeper than results and race reports.

What challenges have you overcome? What inspired you to start racing? What does this journey mean to you or your family? These are the kinds of details that create an emotional connection and help sponsors see the bigger picture of the impact they can make.

MotiV8 Training encourages you to write a short version of YOUR story and to help, they have provided a free ‘My Story’ template to help start developing your pitch / brand. You can download it here.
