Has Sim Racing Replaced Karting as Motorsport’s Gateway?

Has sim racing replaced karting as motorsport’s gateway? That is the question asked in this week’s Sim Racing Roundup. With karting costs increasing and becoming unattainable for many, sim racing looks to replace this traditional motorsport entry point. All this and much more this week!

Has Sim Racing Replaced Karting as Motorsport’s Gateway?

Box This Lap has put forward the suggestion that sim racing now offers the most accessible path to motorsport, replacing karting as an affordable entry.

“Today, however, karting has become a very expensive activity, especially at competitive levels. Costs can range from thousands to hundreds of thousands of euros for high-level championships and equipment, making karting no longer as accessible for young aspiring drivers. This limits the opportunities for many young talents who, without substantial financial resources, see their chances reduced from the start of their careers.”

Autosport explains how the Motorsport Games are succeeding in a crucial mission. “We want to promote youth and diversity, and to go down to a younger age exactly embodies what the Motorsport Games is about,” Stephane Ratel says. “We want as many countries represented, we want as many categories represented. Motorsport is very often perceived as very expensive, with all the luxury and sparkles of Formula 1. For the general public, it seems not accessible, while the FIA and motorsport has to be for everyone.”

The Esports category has been expanded with the new F4 competition. The FIA already runs the FIA F4 Esports Global Championship within iRacing, but its F4 contest at the Games will use the Spa layout because iRacing does not have a model of the Valencia track. Meanwhile, Esports GT, which runs on Assetto Corsa Competizione, will be racing at a virtual Circuit Ricardo Tormo.

The video above is from Danny Lee. “If you don’t try, you don’t get. The best moments in sim racing are the plans you lay down optimistically, but don’t expect to actually work for one reason or another. This was a great little defense and overtake rolled into one and it only happened because I positioned myself in a way that granted me hope – I think it’ll be a while before I get to capture something like this again!”
