Motorsport UK has launched a consultation surrounding proposals requiring sustainable fuels to be adopted from 2026 in all UK championships and series that stipulate the use of specialist racing fuels. As Stephen Lickorish of Autosport writes, after all the latest controversy about how Motorsport UK has tried to change various regulations, this approach is sensible.
Draft regulations have now been created that would require all categories where specialist racing fuels are mandated to instead use fuels that are made of at least 50% sustainable content from 2026.
“The balance to strike with fuel use in competition is that it’s actually a very small part of the overall environmental impact of the sport, so there’s no point pretending we’re going to solve the world’s problems by switching a small proportion of our community to a sustainable fuel. But we’ve got to start somewhere and, if you’re racing in a series where there are technical or sporting reasons to justify using a specialist racing fuel, then those are the circumstances where a mandated switch to a sustainable specialist racing fuel is going to be the easiest transition.”

Formula 1 has announced a new long-term Global Sponsorship deal with Saudi Aramco (Aramco), a partner in their sustainable fuel initiative. Formula 1 and Aramco will combine their considerable shared expertise to identify opportunities for the advancement of sustainable fuels, enhanced engine efficiencies and emerging mobility technology.
Following the announcement of Formula 1’s sustainability plans in November 2019, this partnership has the potential to further develop and accelerate its plans towards a power unit fueled by advanced sustainable fuels.

While hosting their third Sustainable Innovation Series on Nature and Motor Sport at 2024 FIA Motorsport Games, the global regulator of motorsport announced they have signed the Sports for Nature Framework.
The Framework is a global joint initiative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy.
It aims to engage sports organisations all over the world in the conservation and restoration of nature and to leverage the transformative power of sports to drive effective change by 2030 and beyond.

Swiss sustainable lightweighting company Bcomp has collaborated with Škoda Motorsport to integrate natural fibre composites into the Škoda Enyaq RS Race and Škoda Fabia RS Rally2. It marks the start of an important new chapter for innovative and sustainable materials at Škoda Motorsport.
The Škoda Motorsport projects use two of Bcomp’s flax-fibre-based natural composite technologies, ampliTex™ and powerRibs™. The first, ampliTex™, is a technical fabric designed for composite layups and the second, powerRibs™, is a unique reinforcement structure to give ampliTex™ parts greater stiffness. The high-tech composite solutions are well-proven in motorsport and automotive applications.

Formula E driver Lucas di Grassi explains the competing demands of electric powertrain development.
“When developing a new electric powertrain for Formula E, multiple objectives must be balanced and prioritised. Power, efficiency and controllability are all crucial for manufacturers, and compromise is inevitable when determining the best overall package. A highly efficient powertrain is of little use if it cannot reach maximum power quickly enough, has too much inertia, or lacks the necessary software controls for energy management.”

The TCR cars competing in the 2024 FIA Motorsport Games used synthetic fuels for the first time during a race weekend, a first step for a broader introduction in 2025 across the global TCR category.
“We are working on taking steps to make the TCR more attractive and give the manufacturers what they need to continue with us in terms of sustainability, like the use of synthetic fuels and the introduction of a hybrid system,” said WSC president Marcello Lotti to TouringCarTimes.
“We are already working to have a 100% sustainable fuel in 2025 to be available for all the teams. We think this is a first step in the right direction to offer the manufacturers what they need for a more sustainable series.”

Andretti and Porsche have become the latest teams to unveil their liveries for Season 11.
The American squad, powered by Porsche, has stuck with continuity and will race with a white, red and blue colour scheme, in true patriotic style.
Purple Sky Metallic and Shade Green Metallic, these are the new colours on the cladding of the Porsche 99X Electric. The shades of purple and green replace the traditional combination of black, white and red. They symbolize the technology transfer from motorsport to production.

Extreme H testing continued at Fontjoncouse in France last week, with a group of Extreme E’s top drivers, as well as a World Rallycross race winner getting their first taste of the hydrogen-fueled Pioneer 25 set to race next year.
The latest testers echoed the positive reaction of the car’s initial testers, with the younger Hansen saying, “It’s really fascinating to try a new part of the future of motorsport. It’s been a really good test so far, trying to feel the development of this new Extreme H car, working with the team to work on every bit of the car, from wipers to the tires — everything we can imagine when you start from scratch with a new car. So it’s super exciting times, and hopefully we can have a great championship next year.”

JRP President Yoshihisa Ueno shares his thoughts about Super Formula’s vision for an expanded Asian footprint and their work in sustainability in this interview with Jamie Klein of Japan Racing Insider.
JK: At Fuji, we saw JRP chairman Masahiko Kondo sampling the ‘Red Tiger’ car using prototype tyres with 60 percent renewable materials. Will these tyres be used in the championship next year?
YU: The spec for next year hasn’t been decided yet, but we won’t use the 60 percent tyres next year. They are just prototype tyres. The important thing is to increase the sustainability factor gradually over time. Even a one percent increase is a positive step. Originally the goal was 35 percent for 2025, so we are nearly there already [the current tyres introduced in 2023 have 33 percent renewable content].
But what we need from the tyres in terms of performance needs to be considered. Entertainment is also something we have to consider along with sustainability. We don’t want to compromise one by increasing the other. So there’s no hurry to dramatically increase the percentage of sustainability materials.
