Goodwood Revival was awarded the Motorsport UK Environmental Sustainability Award, celebrating the event’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for motorsport. The Duke of Richmond collected the accolade during Motorsport UK’s annual Night of Champions awards evening, on Saturday 25 January 2025 with the sport’s leading drivers, volunteers, personalities and community members widely celebrated.

In a milestone moment, the 2024 Goodwood Revival became the world’s first historic motorsport event to run its entire race roster solely on sustainable fuel, as part of a landmark initiative. All those competing were required to use a fuel which had a minimum of 70% advanced sustainable components.

The new regulations have been gradually introduced at Goodwood, with the first sustainably-fueled race taking place at the 2023 Revival, followed by two sustainably-fueled races at the 81st Members’ Meeting in April 2024. No modifications are required in order for cars and bikes to run on the ‘drop-in’ sustainable fuels.

Goodwood will continue to champion the use of sustainable fuels in 2025, with all competitors at the 82nd Members’ Meeting and Goodwood Revival required to race using sustainable fuel.

NASCAR 1000kW electric prototype

For the second year, NASCAR will experiment with its ABB EV prototype vehicle, as the racing series hedges its bets according to Sports Business Journal. Last year, NASCAR’s research and development department built and debuted its first EV and sold the title sponsor rights to global technology company ABB, which also is the title sponsor of the Formula E fully electric racing series. NASCAR and ABB have been using the car as a showcase of their technological abilities but there’s currently no plan to form an EV-specific NASCAR series.

Asked about what he’d like to see this year with the EV, NASCAR COO Steve O’Donnell hinted at trying to break some speed records, saying, “I’d like to see it on track more, I’d like to see it maybe testing some of the boundaries of electrification and stock cars, chasing some speed records, so there’s a lot on the table that we can look at with ABB.”

F1 Net Zero 2030 Logo

If you are wondering how the new Trump administration will affect Formula 1’s sustainability goals, Maja Czarzasty-Zybert explains that F1 will continue to take a global view.

“Despite the differences in climate policies across regions, F1 teams have adopted a unified approach to environmental issues. In the face of global commitments and market pressures, including from global sponsors, they have decided to adhere to the strictest environmental standards. Even if regulations in the USA are less stringent, teams cannot afford to reduce their efforts to decrease their carbon footprint. This approach stems from the fact that Formula 1 is a globally recognized brand, and aligning with the most stringent European standards ensures its leadership in ecological innovation.”

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) has announced that the MissionH24 H24EVO prototype will switch from gaseous to liquid hydrogen storage during this week’s ‘Hyvolution Paris’ exhibition.

“After introducing gaseous hydrogen to the racetrack, MissionH24, with the H24EVO, is now embarking on a crucial new phase with a dual challenge: to engage liquid hydrogen in competition and to rival the competition from conventional combustion engines,” ACO President Pierre Fillon said. “This mission is essential to achieve zero CO2 emission in motor racing.”

Graham Rahal tells AutoWeek that hybrids in IndyCar are fine but he is not a fan of increasing electrification in the series. “I wouldn’t be afraid of being loud. When I was a kid, that was what it was all about. The sights, the sounds, the smells of racing are something most other sports don’t have, and so we’ve got to keep to that.”
