The Motorsport Fallout From the Conflict in the Middle East

As race and testing cancellations and postponements pile up in the Middle East, Formula 1 looks to take a $200M revenue loss from the two races cancelled in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia during the month of April. Financial analyst firm Guggenheim estimates a $200M revenue shortfall while the cancellation removes crucial track time for racing teams and threatens total revenues, since promoter fees provide 27% of the sport’s overall income.
One of the issues brought up about the F1 cancellations is the reliance that the series has financially on races in the Middle East, something that could severely affect revenue if the region continues to be wracked by geopolitical tension. Here are the latest updates on the situation.

The Financial and Fan Implications of F1’s 2026 Rules
F1’s new engines have divided opinions, with drivers and fans questioning if the racing has become too artificial.
Teams are in ‘open discussion’ with the FIA over tweaks to power unit harvesting and deployment levels, with alterations potentially getting implemented potentially by the Miami Grand Prix if agreed. The unplanned break between the Japanese and Miami races will give teams and the FIA a chance to properly reflect on the new rules.
But any rule changes could have unintended financial consequences, especially for teams fighting for places behind the big four. Sector looks at what these could be.
How the teams adapt and what fan criticism highlight what some feel is wrong with Formula 1 will make for an interesting 2026 season.
What’s at Stake with a Stake in Alpine
The 24% stake in Alpine held by Otro Capital’s star-backed investor group is attracting interest across the F1 paddock as team valuations surge. Why is Mercedes interested in buying into Alpine? What will Ryan Reynolds and Rory McIlroy do?
“If Otro Capital chose to sell its 24% holding now, the investor group could therefore stand to make a significant return on what was initially positioned as a long-term strategic investment and that possibility has drawn attention from across the paddock.”

Fox Not Spinning its Wheels with NASCAR Despite IndyCar Investment
FOX Sports’ decision to drop “Race Hub” and heavily promote INDYCAR in recent years has led to chatter in NASCAR circles about tension between Fox Corporation and NASCAR. But Fox and NASCAR say their relationship is fine and that the industry talk is inaccurate.
Jordan Bazant: “We’re in a great place with NASCAR. We’ve had a lot of success together for more than 25 years, and the measure of any great relationship is the ongoing ability to have the conversations necessary to make things better, to keep things moving forward.” https://lnkd.in/eRRdWNnC
Former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace chimed in with his own comments on the situation. “I love IndyCar. … I love Roger Penske. … IndyCar, they are wonderful cars, and they are great people. I love them. Okay, now that I said that, IndyCar is a much lower series than NASCAR. Even though they’re very sophisticated, they got a lot of money, and they fly upside down airplanes.”
Arlington IndyCar Race Wows Drivers, Teams and Fans

The drivers loved it. The teams loved. The fans loved it. Looks like IndyCar has got a hit on its hands with the inaugural Grand Prix of Arlington. As Marshall Pruett writes, this is just what Indycar needed. A number of drivers noted how the track and amenities were very similar to an F1 event.
Penske’s Desert Double Drives Record IndyCar Views
The 2026 NTT IndyCar race at Phoenix Raceway averaged 1.247 million viewers, showcasing untapped revenue from multi-series alignment. Roger Penske’s integration of IndyCar and NASCAR in the “Desert Double” weekend leveraged cross-promotions, boosting economic synergies and sponsor appeal. Vantage explains the possibilities here.
Pato O’Ward on the ‘Red Flag’ that has Prevented an IndyCar Mexico Race
Pato O’Ward has discussed that in the future he would like to see a true home race for him in Mexico. However, he indicated that to achieve such a result, it is necessary for all parties involved to learn from what happened in Texas last weekend.
“I definitely don’t think it’s a matter of whether they want to go. I think it’s a matter of the parties involved. We need to see what we see here, in Mexico. Everyone who is doing this this weekend wants it to be a success. Everyone who is here wants it to look good, for it to be good. Everyone has something to lose. Everyone involved wants it to be what it deserves to be.”
IndyCar Proposed to Race Near Downtown Denver
Denver is being pitched as a new stop on the IndyCar circuit with a high-speed car race around Empower Field at Mile High proposed to start as soon as next year reports 9 News.
“The multiday Indy Grand Prix in Denver could start their engines as soon as 2027, according to a pitch deck. Promoters of the IndyCar event are asking for a four-year commitment to host the race in Denver and seek sponsors and partners to help fund the race at $650,000 annually through 2030, according to a presentation obtained by the Denver Business Journal.”
WRC Set for UK Return with Rally Scotland from 2027

The FIA World Rally Championship will return to the United Kingdom in 2027 with the introduction of WRC Rally Scotland, marking the series’ comeback to one of rallying’s most historic territories. The agreement forms an initial three-year deal beginning in 2027 and ends an eight-year absence for the championship in the UK, following the most recent running of Wales Rally GB in 2019.
Tom Howard in Autosport explains how the impact of the World Rally Championship’s return to Great Britain could be a real turning point for British rallying. “There’s no question that Rally GB, the RAC Rally, was always voted by the drivers as one of the best events in the World Championship,” said former driver and M-Sport-Ford team owner and now FIA deputy president for sport Malcolm Wilson at yesterday’s Rally Scotland launch in Aberdeen. “To now come to Scotland, with some of the best stages in the UK, is fantastic. Not only that, but this is a great platform and a brilliant place to build a base for the future.”

Judge Grants JGR Discovery, but Warns Against ‘Fishing Expedition’
A federal judge granted Joe Gibbs Racing an expedited discovery request in its lawsuit against its former competition director Chris Gabehart but placed limitations on it, including the timeframe it could cover, telling both sides numerous times throughout the two-hour hearing that she wouldn’t allow a fishing expedition.
Michael May has the details in his LinkedIn post here. “Forensic analysis reportedly shows Gabehart accessed JGR files after leaving the company, triggered by a sync between his personal Google account and JGR OneDrive. The surprise discovery of a new, undisclosed personal laptop heightened the judge’s frustration. This device will now undergo a full forensic audit.”
